Judo is both a sport and Martial Art

Judo is also referred to as modern Japanese Martial Arts. Its moves and actions represent the cultural aspect of the country. As a sport, Judo marked its entry into the Olympics in 1964. It took four years for men to compete in Judo as an Olympic event in 1968. For women, it was only until 1994, when the first Female Judo Olympic was held. Further, in 1988, Judo was added as a Paralympic event.

Origin of Judo

Jigori Kano is regarded as the founder of Judo. Kano started Judo to create an approach and opinions about martial arts. The main idea was to use the opponent’s strength and energy against him. Judo is also influenced by Jiujutsu, but many dangerous techniques have been eliminated for safety. Kano’s art was then termed ‘Kodokan Judo’.

Higher popularity in France

Judo was originally a Japanese sport.  However, it is surprising that the number of people practicing Judo in France is three times that in Japan. The number of registered competitors has decreased in Japan. In France, the number has been steadily rising throughout the years since the establishment of the Judo Federation after World War 2.

Jigori Kano had a Judo school where a notable contest took place in 1886. The primary aim of the match was to set up a competitive drive between Judo and Jiujutsu and conclude which is more superior. Jigori Kano’s students achieved a big win. Thus, Judo got recognition in 1910 and got introduced into the Japanese education system in 1911.  

Unique Techniques

Unlike other combat sports, Judo does not use any brute force against the opponent. Usually, there are three prominent techniques in Judo that help play against the opponent. For any opponent who is on the ground, the throwing technique is the most effective. The second is Katame-Waza, i.e., pinning your opponent to the ground and forcing them into submission. The third one is Atemi-Waza which is best used in weakening the opponent’s body balance by striking on the most vital locations of his/her body.
